Priscilla Herdman
"The Road Home" |
From her stunning debut, The Water Lily (1977), through all her varied recordings over the years, Priscilla Herdman has established herself as an insightful songfinder and a singer of uncommon range, depth and clarity. The Road Home may be Priscilla's best work to date. The gentle power of her voice, the uncluttered arrangements and the timeliness of the songs themselves make the album a true pleasure to listen to. The combination of Priscilla's beautiful voice and careful choice of meaningful songs, make The Road Home an album of striking elegance. |
Priscilla Herdman
"Moondreamer" |
Moondreamer is Priscilla Herdman's third album of music for children and families, and her tenth release overall. It's a marvelous collection of lullabies culled from a diversity of sources and lovingly rendered by what The New York Times' Stephen Holden has called "one of the clearest and most compelling voices of contemporary folk music." Moondreamer is a companion piece to Stardreamer, Priscilla's highly acclaimed and successful previous lullaby collection. Geoffrey Himes of The Washington Post has noted that "Herdman has an uncanny knack for turning up brilliantly written folk tunes," and this is nowhere better evidenced than by the songs that Priscilla has chosen to perform on Moondreamer: "Howl At the Moon" (Cheryl Wheeler) - "A Velveteen Love Song" (Bob Franke) - "One Thousand Pairs of Pajamas" (Anne Hills) - "Mid Night Round" (Anne Hills & Allen Power) - "While you Sleep" (Anne Hills) - "Bluegrass Boy" (Peter Rowan) - "Stars on the Water" (Si Kahn & Fred Koller) - "John O'Dreams" (words: Bill Caddick, music adapted from Tchaikovsky Symphony #6) - "Moon and Me" (Bill Harley) - "Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel) " (Billy Joel) - "Dreamland" (Mary Chapin Carpenter) - "All Through the Night" (Traditional) |
Anne Hills
"Bittersweet Street" |
"Anne Hills is such an exquisite singer that it's understandable that people might be swept up in the pure beauty of her voice and thereby overlook her writing. That would be a mistake. For me, Anne's writing, is as direct, melodic and deep as any work being done today. She is quite simply one of my absolute favorite songwriters." "One of the most glorious voices in all of contemporary folk music." "Bittersweet Street," Anne's debut release on Redwing Music, is the second album to focus on her own original songs. Visiting such diverse subjects as the Civil War, love lost and found, alcoholism, a yard of dreams and the dreams of the exiled, she reaches to the heart with a poet's evocative palette and a singer's love of melody. Anne received the Kerrville Music Foundation's Outstanding Female Vocalist Award in 1997. Selections: |
Cindy Mangsen
"Songs of Experience" |
"Cindy Mangsen combines a magnificent smoky voice with pure intelligence. Intelligence in choosing songs, in writing songs, and understanding of what she sings." "Songs of Experience" is Cindy Mangsen's first Redwing Music release and shows how beautifully time can enrich, strengthen and add color to a naturally gifted voice. The Boston Globe called her "one of the finest pure ballad singers in folk today, a wondrously clear and honest vocalist." "Songs of Experience" returns to the wellspring of traditional ballads, revealing Cindy's keen insight into the deeper meanings of these songs and her unique ability to convey their elemental power. She is also an exceptional song finder and brings a few new tunes that sing well side by side with their distant cousins. These songs, in the hands of a true artist, become again what they were meant to be. The beauty and emotional intensity of these performances set a standard by which other singers of traditional music will be measured for some time to come. Selections: |
Steve Gillettte
"Texas & Tennessee" |
"He is obviously possessed of a major songwriting talent, and his singing is likewise excellent. Perhaps the most refreshing element in Steve Gillette is his honesty. He comes on stage with something to say." In a musical age created by the singer-songwriter, Steve Gillette is considered to be among the finest. His music has inspired glowing reviews from the critics and the deep loyalty of his fans. Since Ian and Sylvia first recorded "Darcy Farrow" in 1966, Steve's songs have been recorded by dozens of major artists including Garth Brooks, John Denver, Waylon Jennings, Anne Murray, Kenny Rogers, Linda Ronstadt and Tammy Wynette. Redwing Music's release of "Texas and Tennessee" provides a window into Steve's house of songs -- rooms filled with stories that illuminate what is timeless and true in the course of everyday life. Stories rendered with the poetic clarity that is the hallmark of Steve's work. The songs celebrate his roots, shine with his unique vision and are graced with his highly distinctive guitar style. Steve's richly colored baritone makes it easy to relax and enjoy the flow of lyric and melody. "Texas & Tennessee" is an intimate, fresh and deeply personal song cycle exploring themes of time, love and memory. Selections: |
Darcie Deaville
"Tornado In Slo Mo" |
"If you have never seen Darcie Deaville perform, it’s about time you did. She thoroughly captivates an audience with her own style of performing. Using talents rarely found in one individual (fiddle, guitar, mandolin) and putting them together with her high, lonesome singing, Darcie seems to be a lost traveller from the heart of America’s past.”
"Intelligent, warmly satisfying and touching. At home on an assortment of instruments, Darcie Deaville is not to be overlooked." Darcie's Redwing Music debut is an inspired collection of songs from one of Austin’s finest writers and most exciting singer- instrumentalists. Joined by co-producer Marvin Dykhuis and a stellar cast featuring some of Austin’s best musicians, Darcie’s writng, singing and fiery instrumental work have never been better showcased. "Tornado in Slo Mo" is a survivor’s narrative, and its songs resonate with hard won hope and resilience. Selections: |
Anne Hills & Michael Smith
"Paradise Lost & Found" |
"Among the cognoscenti of the Chicago folk scene, Michael Smith, author of such standards as "The Dutchman" and "Spoon River" was the songwriters' songwriter, and beautifully honest soprano Anne Hills the diva of record."
Although they are primarily engaged in successful solo careers, Anne Hills and Michael Smith have built a joint repertoire that brings audiences to their feet whenever they share an evening's performance. This autumn, Redwing Music is proud to debut their long awaited first duet project, Paradise Lost & Found. It includes some perennial favorites like Michael's "The Dutchman" and Anne's "Silken Dreams," but also introduces more of their collaborative work and new songs from each of them. Paradise Lost & Found is a live in the studio recording that beautifully captures the warmth and electricity of Anne and Michael’s stage performances. Selections: |
Paul Kahn
"These Ears and Eyes" |
“Well written ... wistful, magical.”
Paul Kahn’s original songs on this debut CD are unique and endearing. Word play, multiple meanings, and intriguing characters and settings abound. Though Paul has performed and recorded with the likes of Bela Fleck and Eric Schoenberg, his primary pursuit has been his agency, Concerted Efforts, which books and manages roots music artists. These Ears and Eyes reveals a songster who has absorbed and distilled songwriting and musical influences as diverse as American music into a blend of gourmet Americana. Some of Chicago’s finest musicians, including producer/violinist Stuart Rosenberg and string wizard Donald Stiernberg, provide inspired accompaniment. You’ll be both bemused and charmed by Paul’s approach. Selections: |
Sol y Canto
"En Todo Momento (At Every Moment)" |
“Given the current groundswell of Latin music across the US, it takes mucho individuality for one band to pull away from the pack. Boston's Sol y Canto has done exactly that... The husband-and-wife team of Brian and Rosi Amador create a musical marriage made in heaven."
En Todo Momento (At Every Moment), Sol y Canto’s third release, is a perfect example of the adage, “less is more.” The instrumentation, nearly all acoustic, has been pared back slightly to feature intricate trio harmonies, sumptuous Spanish guitar and the sparkling voice of lead singer Rosi Amador. The repertoire is evenly balanced between ballads and danceable Afro-latin styles, featuring old-style Cuban son, Puerto Rican bamba, and Afro-Peruvian lando, including several original compositions. Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen
"A Sense Of Place" |
Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen’s collaborative efforts on stage and in the studio over the last twelve years have consistently produced a special magic. Steve and Cindy describe A Sense of Place, their first duo recording since 1996, as “a true labor of love, as close as we could come to a musical synesthetic of our life in Vermont.” Combining songs from traditional sources and some of today’s finest writers (Jon Ims, Jack Hardy, Cindy Kallet) with two each of their own new songs, Steve and Cindy have painted a richly nuanced and affecting portrait of the place that they call home.
