Priscilla Herdman

The Road Home

"The Road Home"

From her stunning debut, The Water Lily (1977), through all her varied recordings over the years, Priscilla Herdman has established herself as an insightful songfinder and a singer of uncommon range, depth and clarity. The Road Home may be Priscilla's best work to date. The gentle power of her voice, the uncluttered arrangements and the timeliness of the songs themselves make the album a true pleasure to listen to. The combination of Priscilla's beautiful voice and careful choice of meaningful songs, make The Road Home an album of striking elegance.

This is Priscilla Herdman's first solo project in five years, and well worth the wait. With this recording, Priscilla brings her devoted fans and new listeners on the scenic route back to the place we all hold dear. Produced by her long-time friends and collaborators Anne Hills and Scott Petito, The Road Home is a collection of diverse journey songs by some of today's finest writers including Eliza Gilkyson, Anne Hills, Julie Gold, Linda Thompson and the late Dave Carter. This is Priscilla's twelfth recording project and she is accompanied by guitarists Artie Traum and Al Petteway as well as multi-instrumentalist Petito. The songs’ subjects range from the dispossessed (“Exile” by Hills) and distressed (“Kisingani” by Norwegian songwriter Henning Kvitnes) to the poignant closer (“Here” by Neal Hagburg). In each of the album’s compositions, Priscilla finds the heart of the song and communicates with the strength and ease honed by 25 years at her profession. While traversing a wide range of human experience, she chooses songs of humanistic vision and caring, leaving her audience enriched.

Priscilla Herdman

Moondreamer

"Moondreamer"

Moondreamer is Priscilla Herdman's third album of music for children and families, and her tenth release overall. It's a marvelous collection of lullabies culled from a diversity of sources and lovingly rendered by what The New York Times' Stephen Holden has called "one of the clearest and most compelling voices of contemporary folk music." Moondreamer is a companion piece to Stardreamer, Priscilla's highly acclaimed and successful previous lullaby collection.

Geoffrey Himes of The Washington Post has noted that "Herdman has an uncanny knack for turning up brilliantly written folk tunes," and this is nowhere better evidenced than by the songs that Priscilla has chosen to perform on Moondreamer: "Howl At the Moon" (Cheryl Wheeler) - "A Velveteen Love Song" (Bob Franke) - "One Thousand Pairs of Pajamas" (Anne Hills) - "Mid Night Round" (Anne Hills & Allen Power) - "While you Sleep" (Anne Hills) - "Bluegrass Boy" (Peter Rowan) - "Stars on the Water" (Si Kahn & Fred Koller) - "John O'Dreams" (words: Bill Caddick, music adapted from Tchaikovsky Symphony #6) - "Moon and Me" (Bill Harley) - "Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel) " (Billy Joel) - "Dreamland" (Mary Chapin Carpenter) - "All Through the Night" (Traditional)

Anne Hills

Bittersweet Street

"Bittersweet Street"

"Anne Hills is such an exquisite singer that it's understandable that people might be swept up in the pure beauty of her voice and thereby overlook her writing. That would be a mistake. For me, Anne's writing, is as direct, melodic and deep as any work being done today. She is quite simply one of my absolute favorite songwriters."
--Tom Paxton

"One of the most glorious voices in all of contemporary folk music."
-- Chicago Tribune

"Bittersweet Street," Anne's debut release on Redwing Music, is the second album to focus on her own original songs. Visiting such diverse subjects as the Civil War, love lost and found, alcoholism, a yard of dreams and the dreams of the exiled, she reaches to the heart with a poet's evocative palette and a singer's love of melody. Anne received the Kerrville Music Foundation's Outstanding Female Vocalist Award in 1997.

Selections:
Pleiades - Yard Dreams - 1st Day of Autumn - Blur in the Photograph - Cloudships - Bittersweet Street - Exile - Just By Offering - Some Boats - New Companion - Wait By the River - Close the Door

Cindy Mangsen

Songs of Experience

"Songs of Experience"

"Cindy Mangsen combines a magnificent smoky voice with pure intelligence. Intelligence in choosing songs, in writing songs, and understanding of what she sings."
-- Rich Warren, Sing Out Magazine

"Songs of Experience" is Cindy Mangsen's first Redwing Music release and shows how beautifully time can enrich, strengthen and add color to a naturally gifted voice. The Boston Globe called her "one of the finest pure ballad singers in folk today, a wondrously clear and honest vocalist." "Songs of Experience" returns to the wellspring of traditional ballads, revealing Cindy's keen insight into the deeper meanings of these songs and her unique ability to convey their elemental power. She is also an exceptional song finder and brings a few new tunes that sing well side by side with their distant cousins.

These songs, in the hands of a true artist, become again what they were meant to be. The beauty and emotional intensity of these performances set a standard by which other singers of traditional music will be measured for some time to come.

Steve Gillettte

Texas & Tennessee

"Texas & Tennessee"

"He is obviously possessed of a major songwriting talent, and his singing is likewise excellent. Perhaps the most refreshing element in Steve Gillette is his honesty. He comes on stage with something to say."
- Cashbox Magazine

In a musical age created by the singer-songwriter, Steve Gillette is considered to be among the finest. His music has inspired glowing reviews from the critics and the deep loyalty of his fans. Since Ian and Sylvia first recorded "Darcy Farrow" in 1966, Steve's songs have been recorded by dozens of major artists including Garth Brooks, John Denver, Waylon Jennings, Anne Murray, Kenny Rogers, Linda Ronstadt and Tammy Wynette.

Darcie Deaville

Tornado In Slo Mo

"Tornado In Slo Mo"

"If you have never seen Darcie Deaville perform, it’s about time you did. She thoroughly captivates an audience with her own style of performing. Using talents rarely found in one individual (fiddle, guitar, mandolin) and putting them together with her high, lonesome singing, Darcie seems to be a lost traveller from the heart of America’s past.”
- John McEuen

"Intelligent, warmly satisfying and touching. At home on an assortment of instruments, Darcie Deaville is not to be overlooked."
- New York Times, December, 1998

Darcie's Redwing Music debut is an inspired collection of songs from one of Austin’s finest writers and most exciting singer- instrumentalists. Joined by co-producer Marvin Dykhuis and a stellar cast featuring some of Austin’s best musicians, Darcie’s writng, singing and fiery instrumental work have never been better showcased.

Anne Hills & Michael Smith

Paradise Lost & Found

"Paradise Lost & Found"

"Among the cognoscenti of the Chicago folk scene, Michael Smith, author of such standards as "The Dutchman" and "Spoon River" was the songwriters' songwriter, and beautifully honest soprano Anne Hills the diva of record."
- Scott Alarik, The Boston Globe

Although they are primarily engaged in successful solo careers, Anne Hills and Michael Smith have built a joint repertoire that brings audiences to their feet whenever they share an evening's performance. This autumn, Redwing Music is proud to debut their long awaited first duet project, Paradise Lost & Found. It includes some perennial favorites like Michael's "The Dutchman" and Anne's "Silken Dreams," but also introduces more of their collaborative work and new songs from each of them. Paul Kahn

These Ears and Eyes

"These Ears and Eyes"

“Well written ... wistful, magical.”
- Kate McGarrigle

Paul Kahn’s original songs on this debut CD are unique and endearing. Word play, multiple meanings, and intriguing characters and settings abound. Though Paul has performed and recorded with the likes of Bela Fleck and Eric Schoenberg, his primary pursuit has been his agency, Concerted Efforts, which books and manages roots music artists. These Ears and Eyes reveals a songster who has absorbed and distilled songwriting and musical influences as diverse as American music into a blend of gourmet Americana. Some of Chicago’s finest musicians, including producer/violinist Stuart Rosenberg and string wizard Donald Stiernberg, provide inspired accompaniment. You’ll be both bemused and charmed by Paul’s approach.

Selections:
Bigger Than My Heart - Lovin' You Way Too Much - These Ears and Eyes - Little Drops of Water - Bear of Orcas Island - November - Second Hand Smoke - Ginger Lee - Marmalade - Mr. Blues - The Wayward Daughter - Shinnecock Canal

Sol y Canto

En Todo Momento (At Every Moment)

"En Todo Momento (At Every Moment)"

“Given the current groundswell of Latin music across the US, it takes mucho individuality for one band to pull away from the pack. Boston's Sol y Canto has done exactly that... The husband-and-wife team of Brian and Rosi Amador create a musical marriage made in heaven."
- Norman Weinstein, Boston Phoenix

En Todo Momento (At Every Moment), Sol y Canto’s third release, is a perfect example of the adage, “less is more.” The instrumentation, nearly all acoustic, has been pared back slightly to feature intricate trio harmonies, sumptuous Spanish guitar and the sparkling voice of lead singer Rosi Amador. The repertoire is evenly balanced between ballads and danceable Afro-latin styles, featuring old-style Cuban son, Puerto Rican bamba, and Afro-Peruvian lando, including several original compositions.

Selections:

A Sense Of Place

"A Sense Of Place"

Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen’s collaborative efforts on stage and in the studio over the last twelve years have consistently produced a special magic. Steve and Cindy describe A Sense of Place, their first duo recording since 1996, as “a true labor of love, as close as we could come to a musical synesthetic of our life in Vermont.” Combining songs from traditional sources and some of today’s finest writers (Jon Ims, Jack Hardy, Cindy Kallet) with two each of their own new songs, Steve and Cindy have painted a richly nuanced and affecting portrait of the place that they call home.

Abby Newton

Castles, Kirks and Caves

"Castles, Kirks and Caves"

In the spring of 2000, Abby Newton, an American cellist long known in the folk music community for her interpretations of Scottish music, traveled to Edinburg to record a CD. Joining her on the project were a group of Scottish and American musicians hand-picked by Abby as much for their love of early Scottish music as for their outstanding musical abilities.
Abby's goal was to perform and record Scottish music from the 18th century at historical locations, taking advantage of the natural acoustical quality of each space. Many of the tunes selected for this project have histories specifically linked to the places she visited.
The title Castles, Kirks (churches), and Caves describes the four settings on the itinerary. They include Hatton Castle, Dunkeld Cathedral, Fingals Cave, and The Magdalen Chapel. Nature and its elements are a feature of all traditional Scottish music, and each of the locations is nestled in a dramatic natural setting. The historic interiors and the mercurial Scottish weather presented a series of challenges and rewards to the musicians and sound crew. The result is a recording of unusual richness and intimacy.

Christine Lavin

I Was In Love With A Difficult Man

"I Was In Love With A Difficult Man"

We are proud to present to you the latest from the woman the Boston Globe called "the classic American troubadour," Christine Lavin. I Was In Love With A Difficult Man is Christine's first all new studio production in five years, a labor of love that she calls "my dream album."
I Was In Love With A Difficult Man is her first with Redwing Music. The title cut is a bouncy reminiscence of a type of man nearly all women are familiar with. As Christine puts it, "If you are a woman you are probably thinking 'been there/done that' - if you are a difficult man you are probably thinking 'more proof that chicks dig us.'"
It also includes "Strangers Talk to Me" (from her hit theatre premiere "Getting In Touch With My Inner Bitch"); "Three Storied Life," which changes keys 13 times and goes into three part harmony (a feat which she is able to carry over into live performance) and two equally amusing numbers, "Making Friends with My Grey Hair" and "Wind Chimes." The album's two ballads, "Firehouse" and "Looked Good On Paper," are a reminder that, funny as she is, Christine is capable of singing straight to the heart. Her boundless energy and vibrant wit and intelligence inform every song on Difficult Man, from the edgy, strongly produced "All You Want Is What You Want" to the spare and starkly affecting "Something Beautiful."
Christine has been a major force in the contemporary music world for two decades with 27 albums to her credit, 14 of them solo. She has appeared on ABC's Good Morning America and NBC's The Today Show. She was featured on CBS's Sunday Morning, CNN and NPR's Weekend Edition and All Things Considered. She is currently the guest host of Sunday Breakfast on WFUV public radio in NYC. She is a multiple-award winner, scoring a NAIRD Award, two New York Music Awards, five ASCAP Composer Awards, and the Kate Wolf Memorial Award. She was named NYC Singer / Songwriter of 2001 by Backstage Magazine.
She performed her song "Firehouse" on an album produced by Suzanne Vega entitled Vigil, a compilation of songs by NYC singer / songwriters composed in the wake of 9/11. She is one of 18 writers of literature and song featured in the audio magazine Writers' Block Party. Her songs have been performed by such diverse artists as the Dartmouth Decibelles, the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington D.C., and international chanteuse Andrea Marcovicci, who rang in the millennium with Christine's songs in a performance with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. One of Christine's most popular compositions, "Sensitive New Age Guys," is part of Joan Micklin Silver's long-running Off Broadway production of A… My Name Will Always Be Alice.

Selections:
1. I Was in Love with a Difficult Man
2. Jack & Wanda
3. Strangers Talk to Me
4. Sunday Breakfast with Christine (and Ervin)
